Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Commonwealth Masonic Lodge No. 186 at 4 Baromi Road, Mirboo North, constructed in 1921-22, is significant. The building, as constructed in 1922, was 'L' shape in plan and comprises the hipped roof section with the projecting gable. It is constructed of red brick and has an arched head multi-pane window to the gable with a rendered signboard 'Masonic Lodge' above and the foundation stone at the base of the wall to the left. The roof has visible rafters, a louvred vent to the gablet and simple eaves brackets. There is one corbelled brick chimney. At one side is a later addition, also in red brick, which has a parapeted wall and a recessed entry with double timber doors. The doors have high set windows with leadlight glass feature Masonic symbols. The Masonic symbol is also set into the rendered lintel above the opening.

The Commonwealth Masonic Lodge No.186 is of local historic and social significance to South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, established in 1900, Commonwealth Lodge No. 186 was the third lodge to be established in South Gippsland and was named in honour of the Federation of Australia. The construction of the present temple was associated with the significant growth in Freemasonry after World War I and demonstrates the importance of Freemasonry in the cultural life of Victorian towns in the twentieth century.
