Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Welshpool Primary School No. 3011, to the extent of the building designed by the Public Works Department and constructed in 1914 and extended in 1919, at 5960 South Gippsland Highway, Welshpool is significant. This weatherboard two-room school has an 'L' shape plan and comprises the 1914 school, which is the projecting gable to the south, with the 1919 addition to the west. There are two large banks of multi-pane window with hoppers in the south elevations and another multi-paned window in the entry porch on the north side. The gable ends have louvred vents and there is one brick chimney with a simple cornice and string course.

How is it significant?
The Welshpool Primary School No. 3011 is of local historic, representative and social significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, it is associated with the development of Welshpool in the early twentieth century, when closer settlement resulted in the need for a larger school to serve the district. (Criterion A)
It is of representative significance as an intact example of a one-room school, which was quickly extended to form a two-room school. It differs from other examples in the Shire due to its L-plan, whereas other examples have the rooms placed side by side. (Criterion D)
It is significant as a place that has strong associations with the Welshpool community through its use as the local school for over 100 years. The school was established with the support of the local community and they have continued to play an active role in the development of the school since its opening. (Criterion G)
