Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The extant archaeological features of the Eureka Extended gold mine site include the remains of two engine beds, a mullock heap and a shaft. However, the site has lost some of its archaeological integrity through recent disturbance. Without an archaeological excavation it is difficult to assess the extent of this disturbance or whether elements of the site remain in situ. The archaeological potential of the site is high as the site has a documented history of approximately 70 years at this location and includes multiple, associated archaeological features.
How is it significant?
The Eureka Extended gold mine site is of historical and archaeological significance to Victoria.
Why is it significant?
The Eureka Extended gold mine is of historical significance because it is associated with a phase of gold mining that occurred in Bendigo from the 1870s characterised by the formation of public gold mining companies to conduct underground quartz mining (Historical Theme 4.5). The site is also associated with the development of a regional township resulting from the increase in wealth and employment generated by this phase of gold mining (Historical Theme 6.6).
