Statement of Significance
This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

First hotel on site, close to corner Queen St & La Trobe St, in 1848.1855 Map - "Royal Oak Hotel", but shown slightly further south.By 1870's 14 room (brick hotel), cellar, stabling yard & shed, "West Bourke Club Hotel". Purchased by Celtic Club 1958. 1880 Panorama shows large building on this site.1905 Map - 2 storey building, West Bourke Club Hotel.
