Statement of Significance
This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

221-223 RUSSELL STREET - Heritage Inventory Description
1866 - building on site. 1874 -five- and two-room brick shop on site and a timber and iron store. By early 1880s George Knight owned two 2 room brick shops on the site, either new or a rebuild/ pairing of the previous two shops. In 1920s Boyes Bros (see # 219) purchased 221, with 223 going to Henry Posner who occupied both shops into the 1950s.
