ROYAL ARCADE - Heritage Inventory Description
First land sale 1837, Block 12 Allotment 17, purchased by Joseph Moore (to Bourke Street); Allotment 18 purchased by John Roach (to Elizabeth Street). 1839 - three buildings.1869 - competition held and present building "Royal Arcade" constructed. Shown 1888 and 1905 maps. Elizabeth Street leg addded in 1901. Block to Elizabeth Street: 1839- onebuilding. 1877 -two buildings and yard.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Royal Arcade is Melbourne's oldest surviving arcade, significant extant fabric. Site also associated with early; settlement, occupied (built upon) by 1839.
Archeological Potential: Extant bldg Fabric,Potential/Disturbed,Site
