Statement of Significance
'A' block was erected between 1860-67 as barracks accommodation for officers of the British Army 40th regiment. The design was done by Public Works Department architect, Gustav Joachimi. The building is the most important of the 19th century barracks complex as it was the centre of defence headquarters administration in Australia from 1860-1960. It houses the famous conference room used as Australia's War Cabinet during WW2.'A' block is of archrectural interest due to its formal, axially aranged design in the conservative Italianate tradtion and is also on of the most important architectural works of Gustav Joachimi.
The classification covers the whole block and it is to be noted that the north wing is a later addition but marries well with the earlier work.
Classified: 29/10/1971
