House, 31 Alma Street, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The timber house is set back from the street by a reasonable distance. The site slopes slightly across the property. The house is approached by a straight path in line with the central front door. The house has a twin transverse gable roofs clad in corrugated steel. The house has been extended along the length of the gable to one side. There is an external face brick chimney on one side. The top of the chimney has simple decorative corbelled brick bands. A bull nose, hipped verandah runs along the width of the original house. The extension has been built to align with the verandah and is screened in. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts and has a cast iron valence. This may have been introduced as it does not fit well between the posts and lacks the usual supporting cast iron brackets. The house is clad in square edged weatherboards. The house has a central front door with flanking timber double hung windows.
The house is characteristic of the simple, small scale timber miner's cottage constructed from the 1850s until the early years of the twentieth century.
