The house at 32 Canterbury Street is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in St. Arnaud in the late 19th century and it demonstrates original design qualities of a rudimentary Victorian style. House, 32 Canterbury Street, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The site at 32 Canterbury Street has visual connections to the predominantly single storey residential streetscape. The house on this site is generally in accord with the form, style, construction and setbacks of the significant houses visually connected to it. The rudimentary Victorian style of the house suggests that it was constructed in the late 19th century.
The house at 32 Canterbury Street has a front setback of approximately 3 metres, and a gravel driveway at the side. The front cottage garden appears to be recent.
The single storey, horizontal weatherboard, rudimentary Victorian styled house is characterised by double gable roof forms that traverse the site, and a convex verandah that projects towards the street frontage. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated iron. An early unpainted brick chimney with a corbelled top adorns the roofline. Very narrow overhangs are a feature of the eaves.
On the front facade, two early timber framed double hung windows are symmetrically composed about an early four panelled single timber door with a toplight. At the side of the house is a recent round galvanised corrugated iron water tank, with a skillion carport at the rear.
The verandah decoration (notably the valances and brackets), appears to have been introduced. The timber verandah columns also appear to be recent.
