Statement of Significance
The house at 21 Childe Street, Stawell, has significance as a moderately intact example of a Late Victorian style. Although no details have been ascertained in support of its history, the Late Victorian design suggests that it was constructed in the late 19th or very early 20th century. The house appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street.
The house at 21 Childe Street is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Stawell in the late 19th and very early 20th centuries. It also demonstrates original design qualities of a Late Victorian style. These qualities include the gable roof form that traverses the site, together with the gable and hipped verandah that project towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated steel roof cladding, brick chimney with a corbelled top, narrow eaves, stop chamfered timber verandah columns, simple timber verandah fretwork valance, timber framed double hung windows and the timber framed doorway.
Overall, the house at 21 Childe Street is of LOCAL significance.

House, 21 Childe Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The house at 21 Childe Street, Stawell, has a modest front setback and wide side setbacks. The property has a garden setting identified by perimeter flower beds. The front is bound by an introduced timber lattice fence and timber picket gate that are approximately 1300 mm high. There are solid timber vehicular gates to one side.
The asymmetrical, single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard, Late Victorian styled house is characterised by gable roof form that traverses the site, together with a gable and hipped verandah that project towards the street frontage. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated steel painted in deep red. A brick chimney with a corbelled top adorns the roofline. Narrow overhangs are features of the eaves.
A feature of the design is the front verandah. It is supported by stop chamfered timber columns and has a simple timber fretwork valance that may have been introduced.
Other features of the design include the timber framed double hung windows and the timber framed doorway.
