Statement of Significance
The house at 29 Childe Street, Stawell, has significance as a moderately intact example of a rudimentary Victorian style. Although no historical details have been ascertained, the rudimentary Victorian design suggests that it was constructed in the late 19th or very early 20th century. The house appears to be in good-fair condition when viewed from the street.
The house at 29 Childe Street is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Stawell in the late 19th and very early 20th centuries. It also demonstrates some original design qualities of a rudimentary Victorian style. These qualities include the simple gable roof form that traverses the site, together with the hipped ogee form verandah that projects towards the street front. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated steel roof cladding, narrow eaves, brick chimneys, central door opening (with timber door and highlight), symmetrically flanking timber framed double hung windows, and the timber construction of the verandah columns and timber fretwork valance.
Overall, the house at 29 Childe Street is of LOCAL significance.

House, 29 Childe Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The house at 29 Childe Street, Stawell, has an open setting largely comprising grassed areas. There is a modest front setback, together with one narrow and one wide side setback. There is no front fence.
The single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard, rudimentary Victorian styled house is characterised by a simple gable roof form that traverses the site, together with a hipped ogee form verandah that projects towards the street front. Towards the rear is a parapetted gable that projects at the side and may be a later addition. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated steel. Brick chimneys adorn the roofline and narrow overhangs are features of the eaves.
The symmetry of the original dwelling is accentuated by the early central door opening (with timber door and highlight) and the flanking timber framed double hung windows.
A feature of the design is the front verandah. It is supported by introduced square timber columns with introduced timber brackets and timber fretwork valance.
