Statement of Significance
The Hammer house, 13 Curtis Street, Stawell, has significance as a moderately intact example of a simple brick miner's cottage. The house appears to be in fair condition when viewed from the street.
The Hammer house, 13 Curtis Street, Stawell, is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Stawell in the second half of the 19th century. The house also demonstrates original design qualities of a rudimentary Victorian style. These qualities include the hipped roof form that traverses the site, single storey height, modest scale and brick walls. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the external brick chimney, narrow eaves, shallow pitched verandah that projects towards the street frontage, galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, and the central timber framed doorway with symmetrically flanking timber framed double hung windows.
Overall, the Hammer house, 13 Curtis Street, Stawell is of LOCAL significance.

House, 13 Curtis Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
This small brick miner's cottage has a modest setback from the street boundary. The house is set very low to the ground. The double fronted cottage has a steeply pitched hipped roof which changes in pitch to form a verandah across the front of the building. The roof and verandah are clad in corrugated steel. There is a face brick external chimney on one side. The chimney has simple corbelled brick banding near the top. The walls are of painted brick. There is a central doorway with a timber framed, double hung window on either side. The verandah is supported on plain timber posts. There is no timber or metal verandah decoration.
