Statement of Significance
The house at 7 Houston Street, Stawell, has significance as a predominantly intact example of a late Edwardian style. Possibly built in the early 20th century, the house appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street. The landscaped setting, particularly the landmark palm tree and front timber picket fence, further contribute to the significance of the property.
The house at 7 Houston Street is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Stawell during the early 20th century. It also demonstrates original design qualities of a late Edwardian style. These qualities include the steeply pitched hipped roof form, together with the minor gable and the hipped verandah that project towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, lapped galvanised corrugated steel roof cladding, broad eaves with exposed timber rafters, paired square timber verandah columns, timber framed windows and the front doorway. The front garden setting, particularly the landmark palm tree, and the front timber picket fence, also contribute to the significance of the place.
Overall, the house at 7 Houston Street is of LOCAL significance.

House, 7 Houston Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The house at 7 Houston Street, Stawell, appears to be set on an average-sized allotment for the area. It has considerable front setback that is characterised by an open grassed areas and perimeter garden beds and mature shrubs. The mature palm tree is a landmark feature in the street. The front is bound by a timber picket fence and gates, approximately 1300 mm high.
The asymmetrical, single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard, late Edwardian styled house is characterised by a steeply pitched hipped roof form, together with a minor gable and a hipped verandah that project towards the street frontage. These roof forms are clad in lapped galvanised corrugated steel. Broad overhangs with exposed timber rafters are features of the eaves.
A feature of the design is the front verandah. It is supported by paired square timber columns. Other features of the design include the timber framed windows and the front doorway.
