Statement of Significance
The former Men's Store and General Emporium, 70 Main Street, Stawell, makes a significant contribution to the architectural and visual amenity of the predominantly 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape. The form and rear sections of the building also contribute to the architectural amenity of the area. The building appears to have been initially built in the 1870s with a crowning decorative pediment and two storey balcony and verandah. Although these features are no longer present and the ground floor shopfront has been extensively altered, the building has significance of as a legacy of the 19th century commercial building developments in Stawell.

Shop, 70 Main Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The former Men's Store and General Emporium building at 70 Main Street, Stawell, contributes to the architectural and visual amenity of the predominantly Victorian and interwar streetscape.
The symmetrical, two storey, rendered brick, Victorian Free Classical styled building is characterised by a projecting and dentillated parapet flanked by rectangular stylised consoles. Below the parapet is a three-bayed first floor composition of arched window and door openings having projecting surrounds with punctuating keystones in the arches and crowning label moulds. The window openings have early timber framed double hung windows, while the central door opening consists of early timber and glazed French doors. Another early decorative feature of the first floor is the masonry quoinwork at the sides.
The first floor is separated from the ground floor by an introduced cantilever canopy. The metal framed shopfront windows and doors on the ground floor, together with the tile surrounds, have also been introduced.
At the rear is an early hipped roof form with rendered parapet walls and early face brick chimneys. There are also several alterations and additions at the rear, including the skillion weatherboard sections on the first floor and the parapeted single storey cream brick wing.
