Shops, 72-74 Main Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The former drapery building at 72-74 Main Street, Stawell, contributes to the architectural and visual amenity of the predominantly Victorian and interwar streetscape.
The symmetrical, two storey, rendered brick, Victorian Free Classical styled building is characterised by a balustraded parapet with a central solid title panel and flanking piers, and dentillated stringcourse. The first floor represents a three-bayed composition, having three arched windows with moulded architraves and punctuating keystones, together with a central window pediment and flanking label moulds. There are also decorative motifs between the label moulds and the window arches.
Separating the first from the ground floors is an introduced corrugated Colorbond verandah supported by square steel posts. The metal framed and glazed ground floor shopfront has been introduced.
At the rear is an early gabled roof form with a stepped parapet forming the termination to the rear partly face brick and partly rendered wall. There is evidence of early signage on the upper reaches of the rear wall, together with an early arched window opening, oculus ventilator in the gable end, and an early brick skillion wing. The face brick chimneys are also early, but the skillion galvanised corrugated steel verandah has been introduced, possibly replacing an earlier verandah.
