House, 23 Scallan Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The house at 23 Scallan Street, Stawell, is located next to St. Peter's Lutheran Church (formerly the Congregational Church). It has a modest front setback denoted by an open grassed area and some plantings near the front verandah and at the side, together with narrow side setbacks. A timber post and rail and woven wire fence forms the side boundary with the Church property.
The symmetrical, single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard, Victorian styled house is characterised by a hipped roof form, together with a hipped bullnosed verandah that projects at the front, and a small steeply pitched hipped roof wing at the rear. These roof forms are clad in red-painted galvanised corrugated iron.
The symmetrical composition is especially identified by the early painted brick chimneys with corbelled tops, together with the early central timber framed door opening with flanking early timber framed double hung windows.
An early feature of the design is the stop chamfered timber verandah posts with decorative cast iron valances and brackets between.
Another early design feature is the narrow eaves.
