House, 16 Skene Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The house at 16 Skene Street, Stawell, is set in a predominantly intact residential streetscape with visual connections to late 19th and early 20th century Victorian, Edwardian/Federation and interwar Bungalow styled houses with well-landscape gardens. This house has a typical front setback with an open grassed area, perimeter garden beds and some mature shrubs and trees. It is bound at the front by an early timber post and woven wire fence, with a metal and woven wire gate at the side. The fence and gate are approximately 1300 mm high.
The asymmetrical, single storey, face red brick, Edwardian/Federation styled house is characterised by a recessed gambrel roof form, together with a gable that projects towards the street frontage. These roof forms are clad in early terra cotta tiles and have early terra cotta ridge decoration and finials. Three early, tall stuccoed and red brick chimneys with projecting tops and terra cotta pots adorn the roofline. Broad overhangs are features of the eaves.
An early feature of the design is the projecting gable, with its timber framed, double hung multi-paned bow window having early decorative leadlighting, and the decorative gable infill above (stucco panelling, timber battening and timber ventilator) that is supported by early timber brackets.
Other early or appropriate features of the design include the curved timber verandah valances, other timber framed double hung windows, timber framed doorway, and the decorative infill in the gambrel end.
