Former 'Belmont' College, 6 Wimmera Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The house known as 'Belmont' at 6 Wimmera Street, Stawell, is set on a corner and contextually wide allotment of the area. It has a garden setting comprising open grassed areas, perimeter garden beds and mature shrubs and trees. The front is bound by a recent steel mesh fence, and there is an introduced lychgate marking the corner. Along the side appears to be early hedging, approximately 900 mm and 1300 mm high respectively.
The single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard, predominantly interwar Californian Bungalow styled house is characterised by an elevated, early 20th century gable roof form that traverses the site, together with a verandah gable that projects towards the street frontage and return skillion verandahs that project at the front and sides. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated iron. An early brick chimney (now painted) adorns the roofline. Broad overhangs are features of the eaves.
Early features of the design are the projecting verandahs added during the interwar period. They are supported by early tapered and square concrete columns which in turn are supported by face brick piers.
Other early features of the design include the timber framed double hung windows.
