FORMER TANNERY COMPLEX - History
The Josephs road precinct was situated just north of the Footscray village (surveyed in 1849). In the 1850's the railway and bridge defined the shape of the area. 1840's-1860's -rural/ 1860's -1880's Tanneries and Urban developement / 1880's -1910 uban and residential growth / 1910-1950's of tanneries/ 1952 Cleghorn tannery largely demolished.
FORMER TANNERY COMPLEX - Interpretation of Site
It is possible that the early buildings marked on Coxs 1864 plan represent the tannery, certainly the MMBW 1894 plan confirms that the tannery stood here and comprised a number (12) of structures.
FORMER TANNERY COMPLEX - Archaeological Significance
Currently, there are disused partly demolished warehouse structures across the site. Concrete floors. As such, it is moderately likey that archaeological features remain below the ground.
FORMER TANNERY COMPLEX - Historical Significance
Cleghorn tannery associated with the neighbouring Hallowstein Tannery. Operated from 1860's. Important early industry in Footscray. Noxious industry on Maribynong gradually phased out in the modern era.
