2 HOPKINS STREET - History
Michaelis Hallenstein factory apparently established in 1864. Munro 1879 is the earliest map found to confirm this. MMBW plans 1894/ 1909 etc show the factory also and these additional buildings - a later plan. A later photo 1952 shows how it has expanded. The railway siding was added about 1915. These four building were remved by 19522 HOPKINS STREET - Interpretation of Site
It is not clear what these structures were, but they may have been associated with the hallenstein factory. They seem to be built around the turn of the century. 1909?
2 HOPKINS STREET - Archaeological Significance
Currently, the land in this location is vacant. There doesn't appear to have much disturbance to the area though some dumping of fill has occured.
2 HOPKINS STREET - Historical Significance
Possibly associated with the Hallenstein tannery. Important early industry in Footscray.

2 HOPKINS STREET - Heritage Inventory Description
Potential site of four buildings marked on the MMBW 1894. these buildings may be associated with the Hallenstein Factory or they may be associated with the railway, which was also associated with the Hallenstein factory running to the powerhouse building to the south. Demolished prior to 1952.
