SUGAR BEET DISTILLERY - History
Sugarbeet distillery, established in the 1860's. Marked onthe Cox plan 1864 and shown in an illustrationdated 1863. Munro 1879 also showns the buildings. Does not appear in valuation records 1882/1883 or MMBW 1894. No longer extant.SUGAR BEET DISTILLERY - Interpretation of Site
Menn Levy and Sons acquired land on the Maribyrnong River in the 1860's. They erected a distillery for making spirits brom beetroot and also produced fodder for cattle. Planted their own beet on the surrounding land. Distillery consisted 3 vessels 1000 gallons each, 2 flue boilers, powered by a 10 horse engine.
SUGAR BEET DISTILLERY - Archaeological Significance
Currently, the land is in the river reserve between the railway siding and the river. It is unlikely to have been heavily disturbed as there has been no subsequent development over the area, but it may have been covered in fill.

Early and important industry for the fledgling city of Footscray. Innovative industry. Industry associated with the Maribyrnong River.

SUGAR BEET DISTILLERY - Heritage Inventory Description
Potential site of the sugarbeet Distillery dating to c. 1864. Previously listed as a D site, the distillery buildings are marked on the 1864 Cox plan and there is also a lithograph indicating the main building dating to 1863. The land is now incorporated in a reserve and may have been covered with fill. No other disturbances are evident.
