4 NEILSON PLACE - Interpretation of Site
No structures in this location until later period when tanneries expanded between 1910 and 1952. May be associated with the buildings shown in a 1952 historical photo.
4 NEILSON PLACE - Archaeological Significance
Due to the presence of the intact remains, it is highly likey that further intact structured remains and associated occupation deposits will be preserved here.
4 NEILSON PLACE - Historical Significance
Hallenstein Tannery stood here from the mid 19th Century and expanded significantly between 1910 and 1952. Hallenstein tannery is an important early industry representing the noxious industries for which Footscray became well known.
Heritage Inventory Description
4 NEILSON PLACE - Heritage Inventory Description
Potential site of factory building associated with the Hallenstein Tannery and dating to 1952. Currently in use as a car park. Within the carpark, however, there are visible remains of red brick and bluestone walls, footings, paving and guttering. There are also some peppercorn trees north of the ruins possibly associated with the site.
