Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
Bungalow Cottage is of historical and architectural significance at a local level and possibly at a state level. Historically, the dwelling is significant for its association with the earliest phase of development at Queenscliff, with the original imported 1850s prefabricated component also significant for its association with the history of such dwellings in Victoria. While an evolved house, and not distinguished architecturally, the prefabricated component of Bungalow Cottage is rare and significant for its ability to demonstrate aspects of prefabricated/portable cottage manufacture and construction, particularly the Manning house approach. It is also understood to be one of a small number of known examples of a Manning prefabricated house in Victoria.

Bungalow Cottage, 78 Mercer Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 1
Extract from the 1982 study
Internal inspection has revealed that these four rooms were manufactured by Manning as a panellised prefabricated house and were probably assembled on the allotment prior to the construction of 80 Mercer Street in early 1860. Four fireplaces were provided, one in each room and their masonry chimneys arched over the central passage to meet in a combined shaft. The chimney shaft has probably been rendered since and given the characteristic Queenscliff coved cornice.

(Note: An internal inspection of the property was not carried out for Stage 1 of the Heritage Study. References to the interior and internal features in the following description derive from the 1984 study.)
Bungalow Cottage is a single storey hipped roof house which has evolved from an early prefabricated dwelling imported from Britain. Additions to the original house include a projecting hipped roof entrance porch to the south-east elevation, a projecting wing to the north-east elevation and a deep return verandah to the rear.
The roof is clad in modern Colorbond sheet. The external walls are clad in asbestos sheet with cover strips to the joints between sheets and timber surrounds to the windows. The upper sections of the windows have six panes, the lower sections comprise a single pane. The cladding and window detailing all appears to date from the 1920s as do the extensions to the north and west. The single large central chimney is presumed to relate to the original prefabricated cottage.
The carport added at the rear of the property is a more recent addition. There is a modern picket fence along the Mercer Street boundary.

Extract from the 1982 study
Since, the exterior has been clad with asbestos sheet and new architraves placed on the openings, a porch has been added, a room joined to the north face and alterations made to what may have been a later free-standing kitchen at the rear.(3) The panellised construction is still visible inside. Bungalow Cottage is of great importance as the best documented, though by no means the best preserved surviving example of a prefabricated house made by Manning of London. The characteristic panelised system of construction is clearly visible in the outside of the two back rooms.
