Statement of Significance
Specific Memorials for the Boer War are quite rare. The presence of two separate war memorials placed side by side together in the one area is even more so. The Wangaratta memorials are both restrained and elegant in design, with their tall, slender shapes set off by the vertical planes of the cathedral and bell tower in the background. Wangaratta WWI Memorial Pillar - Veterans Description for Public
In 1923, the Shires of Borough and Wangaratta jointly erected a monument in the memorial gardens on Ovens and Docker Streets, to commemorate seventy-seven district servicemen who died in the First World War. The monument is a polished granite column surmounted by a globe and standing on a granite plinth. Subsequently two panels have been added to commemorate twenty- eight local soldiers who died in the Second World War, and two local soldiers who died in the Vietnam War. It was designed by Arthur Rundle & James McLeod and unveiled by Colonel Scott, a former Borough engineer. It stands next to a memorial dedicated to the Boer War.
