ANNE ST PIER - History
The pier was built in 1853 by the Government to provide extra berthing for shipping (Vines, 1989:24; BLC#19). Originally called the 'New Pier', by 1855 it was known later as the Government Jetty when it took over from Gem Pier as the preferred landing place. It was renamed the Anne St Pier as of 1855, and by the 1880's it was used for ballast stone loading and firewood and coal discharging. It was reconstructed in 1913, when it was taken over by the Melbourne Harbour Trust as a station for its floating plant and as an alternative to the Reid St Pier. The site is currently owned by Skilled Engineering.
ANNE ST PIER - Interpretation of Site
The early stages of the pier were constructed with bluestone, and later additions consist of timber pilings with a wooden platform which is often concrete capped. A dive was conducted to examine the area for approx 50m in front of the stone base to assess whether any piles from the early jetty construction were still evident. Three divers swam a swimline search out from the base of the stone structure, but visibility was almost zero, and hence the dive in this area was aborted. Of note is the stone pier base is dressed stone which angles down to the sea floor. This is probably the remains of the earliest part of the pier, and modern timber additions to the wharf extend from this base. Diving on the eastern side of the pier is not recommended, due to frequent vessel activity in that area.
The bluestone section of the pier probably dates to its original installation in 1853, and as such is one of the earliest surviving examples of jetty construction in Williamstown. The pier has significance as part of the early Harbour Trust Landscapes and as an early landing place for the colony.
