Contemporary historical sailing direction for 1884, 1897 and 1907 warn mariners to not to anchor in the Torpedo Ground. This region was bounded by the end of Breakwater Pier, the Timeball Tower, and the Gellibrand Pile Light. Given that past removal of mines has not always been thorough, use of this area should proceed with caution. This was the only torpedo ground identified in the area and one of only two torpedo testing areas, the other being the Maribyrnong Battery site.
