FOOTSCRAY BOND STORE WHARF - History
The existing Blackbird Boatshed and Wharf (now occupied by Maribyrnong River Cruises) dates in part to pre 1920's, when it was used by the Harbour Trust Bond Store, and later by several boat building firms. Fawcett and Sims operated a boatbuilding business and slipway at the northern end of the Footscray Wharf by around 1934. The facility was taken over by Campbell Sloss sometime before 1950, who later relinquished the site to Raisebeck and Campbell for the period from 1950 to 1960. The operation was removed sometime around the 1960's.FOOTSCRAY BOND STORE WHARF - Interpretation of Site
The current site of Blackbird's Ferry Landing was formerly occupied by the Government Bond Store, and part of the original 1920's bond store wall has been incorporated into the Northern wall of the current ferry terminal building. The deck of the wharf went back as far as the railway line. It appears that the entire structure has been subjected to extensive maintenance and rebuilding, although possible original timber sheet piling from the original Footscray wharves is still evident under the current structure.
