LYONS STREET EXPLOSIVES STORE, TRAMWAY AND DOCK - History
Between Lyons and Youell St is a stone lined drain which marks the former site of Billy Button Creek. To the adjacent south of this creek and north of the current Safcol factory, a tram line once led west to the Gunpowder store, where explosives were deposited from ships. An enclosed dock is shown at this location in 1857, and is labelled as Dock VG #2 in 1879.
LYONS STREET EXPLOSIVES STORE, TRAMWAY AND DOCK - Interpretation of Site
The bluestone walls of the depot are still evident, and the current Saffcol timber and concrete wharf may be associated with the former depot (Somerville, pers comms) or built over the top of it. A timber pile (H7822-0433) on the rivers edge immediately adjacent to the north of Billy Button Creek Drain outlet could be either part of the former dock structure or the former Footscray General Cargo Wharf South.
To the adjacent south of this creek and north of the current Safcol factory, a tram line once led west to the Gunpowder store, where explosives were deposited from ships. An enclosed dock is shown at this location in 1857, and is labelled as Dock VG #2 in 1879.
The significance is related to the functions of the explosives store and the role it played as an essential port facility. Part of the explosives and defence landscape of the Maribyrnong River.
