JACKS AND MCINTOSH BOAT REPAIR FACILITIES - History
One of the first private boatbuilders in Williamstown, Jacks and McIntosh boatbuilders and shipwrights were located at the end of Thompson St in 1841. Immigration and Harbour Master's Offices had taken over the site by 1856 and a stone jetty had been built in the NE corner of the site diagonal to the current shoreline. By 1877, it was occupied by both a 'yacht club', and the water police situated in the site's SE corner with a jetty on the eastern waterfront.
By 1894, the Nelson place end of the site was occupied by the (water) police with an associated jetty, boat ramp or slipway (D7822-0551). The site is now occupied by the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria. The Victoria Yacht Club was established in 1856 as yachting on Hobson's Bay became more popular. Although the club did not have permanent premises at Williamstown until 1873, members kept their boats there as it afforded the only sheltered anchorage. The club added Royal to its title in the 1880s.
JACKS AND MCINTOSH BOAT REPAIR FACILITIES - Interpretation of Site
Probable jetties and slipways lie under reclaimed land. The seaward end of this location has been filled with rubble to provide boat storage facilities for the yacht club, and former structures on this site probably lie under this. The former water police site is now covered by a car park used by the yacht club, and the jetty site lies partially covered by the modern Williamstown police station and yacht club car park
The site is one of the first boatbuilding sites in Williamstown, and has a continual use as a yacht club facility since the 1880's and a police presence since at least 1894. The site therefore has significance both for maritime industry, recreation and administrative enforcement.
