WILLIAMSTOWN BOAT HARBOUR - History
A small boat harbour was built between Gellibrand and Breakwater Piers ca. 1880's when two stone jetties were built out of from the sides of the piers. The structures are shown in plans from 1890 and 1894. The area was probably also used prior to 1890, as the two piers themselves provided a safe haven from winds. The area was extended and used by small boats until the early-mid 1950's, when it was filled in to provide oil storage facilities.WILLIAMSTOWN BOAT HARBOUR - Interpretation of Site
The site is currently occupied by what is locally known as the tank farm oil storage area. The estimated level of soil fill across the site was between 300 - 2100mm, increasing towards the shoreline, and this was probably deposited to fill in the gaps between railway embankments that crisscross that area. There is a strong possibility that archaeological deposits will have been covered by landfill activities in the area. The current seawall between Gellibrand and Breakwater Pier has probably incorporated the former breakwater groynes.
