STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The single storey brick residence, 'Kent Cottage' in Aphrasia Street, Newtown, was erected in c 1850-54 for Geelong butcher John Cullen. This distinctive Australian Colonial design by unknown architect incorporates a late delicate timber verandah and balustrade encircling a brick residence of axial plan and entrance with French windows and modeled brick cornice. Joseph Watts, architect, designed substantial additions in the late 19th century. 'Kent cottage' is one of the oldest surviving Australian Colonial style houses in the Geelong region with important associations with early settlement of Geelong and colonial butchers Cullen and Edols
