STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
'Bayswater House' in Newtown includes an early timber section of 6 rooms erected in c 1853 for the Cowper family. Extensive timber additions were built after 1878 for W. H. Mortimer. This weatherboard house, with distinctive bay windows and fretwork gable bargeboards, reflects the picturesque traditions in nineteenth century architecture and may include an original prefabricated section, as many timber houses imported from Europe were erected in Newtown between 1853 and 1856. the house has been occupied by several notable Geelong figures.

Bayswater House takes its name from this topographical associations.

The history of this early Geelong house requires detailed physical investigation and may include prefabricated timber sections in the original 6 room structure of c 1853.
