STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Coronal, a Victorian Italianate style two storey stuccoed masonry structure, was erected in 1854-55 as the residence of architect, Benjamin Backhouse, partner in the leading architectural firm in Geelong, Backhouse and Reynolds.
This substantial mansion house of the 1850's with axial plan, projecting ground floor bay windows, surrounded by canopied balconette, rusticated bracketed eaves, slate roof and distinctive wrought iron balustrade, is one of Backhouses's finest designs in Victoria and a powerful indication of the success of this architect in Western Victoria on the 1850's. Coronal is prominently located on Herne Hill with views across the Barwon River Valley.
