Statement of Significance
B Listed - Regional Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
This residence built in 1912 for Mrs Georgina Sutherland, widow, has regional historical significance as an example of Newtown's Edwardian villas constructed for affluent owners and often architect designed. It has regional architectural significance as an unusual Edwardian design, with some particularly interesting elements. There are the window hoods and the first floor balcony, with its fine Art Nouveau wrought iron balustrade.

"Mandalay" - Physical Description 1
DESCRIPTION
A hip roofed, unusual, triple fronted, Edwardian timber house on an elevated site with the central bay set forward as a double storied gable. The left hand bay is set back projecting to the side as a gable. There is another gable projecting to the right-hand side far back . The verandah extended around the angle but this was infilled in the 1930s. The left bay windows were also replaced then. The central bay centre projects further as a rectangular bay pair. Its upper storey is recessed as a balcony whose centre also projects. This upper gable is roughcast timbered, supported at centre and sides with serpentine brackets as is the centre balustrade. This balustrade is its tour deforce. It is a very fine, delicate and Art Nouveau influenced wrought iron. Two windows have skillion hoods with fine Art Nouveau influenced brackets. Chimneys have roughcast bands and pots. (The influence may not however be Art Nouveau, but rather of an Indian hill station a Mandalay, in fact).
