STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
49 Lawton Avenue is significant for its imposing design and the contribution this makes to the streetscape. The delicate timber fretwork is particularly noteworthy. It has an excellent degree of integrity and it is of local significance.

Residence - Physical Description 1
The design is dominated by the large hip roof from which two smaller gable ends project at right angles to each other. A return verandah from one gable end to the other is formed by the extension of the central hip roof. The centrally positioned main entrance is flanked on either side by long, paired double-hung window. However the apparent symmetry of the plan form is offset by the asymmetry of the front elevation. This elevation is unusual in that the front entrance is hardly noticed as the eye is drawn to the projecting gable porch with its simple but highly effective timber fretwork. AT the opposite end of this elevation is a smaller gable with similar fretwork including an arch between the supporting columns. The chimneys are a notable feature of this house and serve as an identifying element of the other very similar houses in Geelong West. Some of these are 9 and 37 Lawton Avenue and 14-18 Aberdeen Street.
