FORMER EBENEZER MANSE - Physical Description 1
This Church Hall and Manse are of importance forming part of a group of three prominent and substantial church buildings. The group is unified by the notable cast iron fence which encloses all buildings along Armstrong Street.
The Church Hall was erected in 1892 [1] and survives largely intact apart from the removal of gable end fretwork and finial. This lack of decoration makes the building austere and heavily detailed and is an unfortunate loss.
The original detailing is visible in an early photograph dated 1920 which shows the central church, flanked on each side by the hall and manse.[2] The manse is a substantial two storey brick residence with elegant bay windows to the ground floor and a delicate cast iron verandah. The loss of the cast iron verandah frieze to both levels is regrettable. The manse is unusual for its lack of a central doorway with the entrance being gained from the side. The quoining, elegant window surrounds, eaves brackets, slate roof and unpainted brickwork all contribute to the importance of this residence.
Both these buildings are in good condition. The loss of planting from in front of the church hall and its replacement by a concrete forecourt is unfortunate. A unified planting scheme in front of the three buildings would greatly enhance the presentation of these buildings.References:
