STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
17 Balliang Street has architectural significance at a local level. The building is a representative and reasonably intact example of an Edwardian residence, a housing type once common in the Geelong region. The building retains its characteristic siting, form and typical details.
17 Balliang Street is a reasonably intact double fronted Edwardian cottage constructed of weatherboard, with a corrugated iron hipped roof and convex verandah. The residence has a typical asymmetrical facade with a projecting gable facing the street. Notable details include double hung sash windows, a central four panel door, decorative eaves brackets and carved decorative end brackets to the verandah. The verandah also has decorative carved timber posts, a delicate fringe and fine lacework. A corbelled brick chimney protrudes from the roof. A brick and lattice fence at the front of the site is a later addition and is not appropriate to the style of the house.
