STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The Dennys, Lascelles, Austin and Company concrete woolstore in Geelong is one of the most important early modern structures in Australia, almost entirely free of architectural decoration and in a style which anticipates architectural trends of the 1920s and 1930s in this country and in Europe. The remarkable bowstring roof trusses of reinforced concrete, span what was claimed to be the "the largest column free space in the world" when completed in 1912.
Edward G Stone was responsible for other innovations concrete structures throughout Australia, including the Geelong Sewerage Aqueduct of 1912. Dennys Lascelles and Company is one of the oldest woolbroking firms in Victoria and the concrete woolstore forms part of an historic complex and intact woolstore precinct.
