SMITH'S BOATYARD AND MARINA - History
Arthur Smith built a marina along the Footscray Wharf north of Bunbury Street Bridge to North of Shepherd's Bridge re-using the Footscray wharf structure. He added the lattice work (currently evident) to the wharf, and used the area to moor pleasure/fishing vessels and a floating restaurant in the 1970's (Somerville, pers comms; Vines, 1989: np).
SMITH'S BOATYARD AND MARINA - Interpretation of Site
The wharf structure here could date back to the earliest Footscray wharves, and for the main part is still extant. The site has high archaeological significance as these mostly intact wharfs are the earliest built wharf structures which still exist in the area.
Heritage Inventory Description
SMITH'S BOATYARD AND MARINA - Heritage Inventory Description
The timber wharf consists of vertical rectangular sheet piling reinforced with horizontal rubbing strake beams, and ties back into the embankment. The lattice work is still evident as a later addition attached to the earlier Footscray Wharf structure, which consists of vertical timber sheet piling reinforced with horizontal beams and tied back into the bank with timber ties.
