VICTORIA FERRY LANDING STEPS - History
Bluestone steps were located close to the Bunbury St end of the wharf were used to disembark passengers from the steam ferry Victoria, which plied between Footscray and Melbourne. The stairs were used up until the 1920's (PSC#1).
VICTORIA FERRY LANDING STEPS - Interpretation of Site
Somerville (pers comms) suspects that the steps are still intact, and could be disturbed by any future excavations in that area. Inspection of this area of wharf revealed a section of horizontal timber planking (as opposed to the standard vertical piling), which could support Somerville's hypothesis. Somerville also indicated that the Footscray council has proposed to revamp this wharf area, hence if the site exists it may be under threat in the near future.
