STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Residence
14 Skene Street
This 1930s house has local significance for its architecture as a two-storey interwar bungalow with a period garden and for its associations with the local builder, Reginald Williams, who constructed a number of Hamilton buildings including Scullions at 196 Gray Street, Fleetwood at 21 Gray Street, 355 Gray Street, and about five other houses in Skene Street (Nos.2, 4, 5, 12 & 16). ([i]) The most directly comparable house is Jandou at 11 Gray Street. The house at 14 Skene Street, which was most probably built by Williams' and was his own home, was completed by 1938. ([ii]) It was owned in the 1960s by its present owner, Dr E J Rowland. ([iii]) It remains significantly intact and in excellent condition.
A number of features survive from the original garden. The most noteworthy are the Fraxinus oxycarpa `Raywood', Claret Ash, on the front lawn which is impressive in size and form and the Cupressus macrocarpa `Aurea', Golden Monterey Cypress, on the front fence which is maintained to a low form.
