Statement of Significance
ELTHAM STUDY STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:
This site features extensive Radiata Pine plantings to most of the boundaries, as well as a driveway avenue and is a good example of the use of this species in a rural environment.
Adding to the significance of this site is the planting of a line of Bhutan Cypress trees between the residence and the line of Radiata Pine trees, which is an unusual doubling of shelter, perhaps in an attempt to create privacy with a more ornamental plant: Most trees are in good condition.
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (with AHC criteria)
MONTEREY PINE & BHUTAN CYPRESS ROWS, and Henzel farm house are significant to Panton Hill:
- for the extensive Monterey pines plantings to boundaries and a driveway avenue, as a good example in the locality of the traditional use of this species in a farming environment (Criterion A4, D2);
- for the line of mature Bhutan Cypress trees between the residence as the ornamental part of the planting which relates well to the inter-war development of the farm (Criterion A4, D2);
- for the long association of both trees and house with Herbert Henzel, a local farmer, and its historical association with the pioneering Mess family (Criterion A4).

Monterey pine and Bhutan cypress rows, Henzel farm house - Physical Description 1
ELTHAM STUDY DESCRIPTON:
The site is situated at the top of a hill and is quite distinct, with the plantings of tall dark green Radiata Pirie trees around the edges of the property, as well as the driveway avenue. The trees are ofconsistent height, exceeding 15 metres and generally in good condition. The line of Bhutan Cypress trees is formal, with trees closely spaced and of consistent size, 12-15 metres tall.
REVISED OR EXTENDED DESCRIPTON:The Monterey pine (also called Radiata pines) row has approximately 22 trees to the north of the house yard with perhaps 20-30 Monterey pines at the west side and rear of the weatherboard inter-war farm house. The trees are typically 22m high. There are approximately7 Bhutan cypress along the east side of the house yard. An AMG reference at the front of the property is 343041 5831430.
Fast growing to over 100 ft (30 m), this pine from California is an important timber tree in other parts of the world, especially Australia and New Zealand. It grows best in well drained soil but does not tolerate extreme dry conditions or heat and can be toppled by strong wind. It has a pyramidal shape when young, becoming more columnar with age. The deep green needles are 4-6 in (10-15 em) long, and the bark is greyish brown. The 4-6 in (10-15 em) long cones are light brown. 'Aurea' is a golden-foliaged cuttlvar that displays its best colour in winter; it is smaller than the species but inclined to revert to green and grow normally { Botanica}.
'Cupressus torulosa' This tall conifer reaches 150 ft (45 m) in its native Himalayas, though in cultivation 5080 ft (15-24 m) is more usual. An elegant tree with a long-pointed crown broader at the base, it is valued for its fast growth and fragrant timber. Its small branchlets are slender and slightly curved, consisting of tiny deep green scale leaves that are blunt tipped. The small cones are purple when young but ripen shiny brown, andthe brown fibrous bark peels into strips. It thrives best in mild, very moist-climates { Botanica}.
