Statement of Significance
Studley House, 15 Nolan Avenue, Kew, is a large, two storey, stuccoed house built circa 1857 for Parliamentarian John Hodgson M.L.C. The house was considerably altered in the early 20th century with the addition of the sympathetically detailed yet dominating north-east wing, the north-west wing and extensive renovations internally. The original house was symmetrical with a double storied colonnade of Ionic on Tuscan orders, supporting a parapet with urns.
Studley House, 15 Nolan Avenue, Kew, is an early house, extensively added to, which is of architectural importance in its present form and has important historical associations with John Hodgson, an early settler in the district and with subsequent owners, including John Wren - ALP lobbyist, bookmaker and millionaire. The first part of the house is an early and particularly fine example of the Italianate style in Victoria.
The later additions dwarf the original house but are of interest in their own right. Plaster and woodwork internally and some of the stained glass are notable. Studley House, 15 Nolan Avenue, Kew, is used as part of a boys school and has been altered accordingly. The building is in good condition generally and reasonably intact.
