Statement of Significance
This two storey brick house with slate roof was constructed on the corner of Royal Parade and Degraves Street in 1873. The gable facing Royal Parade has barge boards and finial with gothic details which are further exhibited in the window dressings and entrance doorway on Degraves Street.
Some houses built in association with churches were designed in the gothic style, as were some cemetery custodians' houses and the nearby Melbourne University gatehouse on Grattan Street.
Nevertheless the gothic style is relatively rare in domestic architecture, and even more so in the terrace form.
