Statement of Significance
A house of 1875 which stands out in an industrial and working class area as the home of a leading businessman in the meat trade and local politician (twice Mayor of Footscray), David Newell, one of a minority of such magnates who resisted the temptation to live away from their businesses in more fashionable suburbs: architecturally its substantial construction in bluestone with creambrick dressings reflects Newell's pre-eminence, and the cement-filled sheet iron columns of the verandah may be the earliest surviving examples of this type, patented in 1873 by Angus McLean.
