Statement of Significance
A large single-storey building decorated in polychromatic brick work. Constructed in 1889 as the engine house for the Port Melbourne and South Melbourne cable tram systems and subsequently redeveloped for other purposes. The building is one of the better preserved of the seven surviving separate engine houses in Melbourne, the largest surviving artefact associated with the cable system in this part of the city. It isa reminder both of an earlier form of transport and the extent of the system which was unusually large and complex by world standards.
