Statement of Significance
A cruciform bluestone church begun in 1865 to the design of Samuel Headen Merrett, extended to his design by Robert Dalton and John Gibbins in 1885, and by Urban Billing in 1888, and completed in 1923 by the addition of St Martin's chapel by Rodney Alsop. The only known example of a church designed by Merrett, it has a severe exterior of interest for its elongated lancet windows and elaborate timber flèche. The interior contains a suite of excellent stained glass by Clayton and Bell, a stone font and an Oamaru stone pulpit, and a reredos made by the Venice and Murano Glass and Mosaic Company (Salviati & Co.) to a design by Clayton and Bell.
