Original Occupant of 83 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine

Walter Wilson, one of Castlemaine's original pioneers first built or lived in this house. The plaque above the door, near the roof line, used read WILSON 1860 or 1861. Walter was a baker by trade, and emigrated to Australia searching for adventure at the commencement of the gold rush. He came from the town of Hawick in Scotland, and travelled to Melbourne on the ship "Diadem" in 1852. in 1860, Walter married Janet Brydon (of Ettrick in Scotland) and they had 3 sons. Walter is my GG Grandfather.
