Statement of Significance
The lighthouse at Port Fairy was constructed in 1859 and formed part of a complex of buildings erected on Griffiths Island, the site of the earliest settlement in Port Fairy. All the other buildings have now been demolished, as have been the buildings orignally erected on the Island by Captain John Griffiths c.1840; the lighthouse is the sole survivor. The lighthouse is a landmark on the island and in the surrounding landscape and the island itself has immense historical importance.
The lighthouse is constructed of stone and is some thirty six feet in height. The shaft of the lighthouse is battered and prominent corbelled brackets support a walkway around the light, which has been automated.
Classified 17/08/1967.
