Statement of Significance
Rosalind Park was set aside as a government camp on the Bendigo goldfields in 1852, dedicated as a recreation reserve in 1861, developed as a public park in the period 1870-1910
- historically, as the site of one of the largest government camps on Victoria's goldfields, the open nature of Rosalind Park still allowing the camp site to be readily appreciated and the reconstructed poppet legs on Camp Hill befitting the early surveillance role of the camp;
- as one of the best examples of a large urban public park in Victoria; features which enhance this quality include the interface with notable nineteenth century streetscapes, the close proximity to significant government buildings, the contrast provided by differing levels of horticultural intensity, the range of horticultural features (open park, fernery, conservatory, floral bedding, 'subsistence', turf, water features);
- for its retention of a path layout and significant planting from the 1870s and complementary planting in the ensuing years;
- for its retention of many early garden elements such as the iron fence, remnants of a fountain, bridges, gates and statuary;
- for its retention of many mature trees, including some of individual horticultural significance;
- for the rich overlay of different uses over many years, all represented by physical attributes and enhanced by contemporary documentation such as photographs and plans.
